The LMHA has funded an after-school tutoring program for public housing youth since 1994. The tutoring centers are located in the Family Resource Centers in all four of the family developments. The centers offer young people a place to go to receive homework assistance, socialize with friends and have contact with positive role models. Each center is equipped with computers and educational software. The hours are 2:00PM - 7:00PM at most locations.

Margi Decker says working with
children every day will keep you young. She should know, as she
works in the After-School Tutoring program at Clarksdale, which
attracts anywhere from 20-60 children Monday through Friday.
Margieís seen a lot of good things happen with the children who take
part in the program, and says it's rewarding to watch many of them
become more interested in school and improve their grades. Margi
became a tutor about six years ago as a result of her experience
as a room mother and volunteer when her children attended Lincoln
Elementary. "I decided I liked it," she says of working
with children.

Eight-year-old Devin Burt loved camp
at Otter Creek Park the most. "He had a ball," says his
mother, Lue Vickers. "He still talks about it." He was
able to take part in the summer activity through the After-School
Tutoring program for Beecher Terrace residents, where he and his
mother live. She said he wouldn't have been able to go without the
program, which offered needed transportation to the site. The daily
after-school programs are essential for this single-parent family
because Lue works full time. The location is convenient and Devin
gets help with school work, she explained. He also gets to play
games and socialize with his peers - a great benefit since he is
an only child. All in all, the program is helping Devin's family
meet his needs. It's a service
that they appreciate and that will help him be successful.
