LOUISVILLE,
KY The Louisville Metro Housing Authority awarded 17 public
housing and Section 8 residents with $25,500 worth of college
scholarships on Thursday, July 21, 2005 at 2:00PM at Holiday Inn
Downtown, Ballroom B (120 W. Broadway).
Over the past 19 years, the traditional LMHA scholarship program
has awarded 299 scholarships with a value of $1,028,390 to residents
of public and assisted housing. The Louisville Housing Assistance
Corporation (LHAC), a LMHA affiliate, funds the program.
One of the keys to success in life and in the workforce
is a commitment to life-long learning, said Metro
Mayor Jerry Abramson. These recipients have demonstrated
that commitment. They know that the best jobs of tomorrow require
getting the best possible skills today. I applaud their tenacity
and wish them continued success.
Scholarship awards were also presented to seven students who are
participating in the LMHAs Realizing Academic Potential
(RAP) program. RAP identifies, targets, supports and provides
financial assistance to youth, beginning in the ninth grade. Each
year, if the student maintains acceptable grades, LMHA will contribute
money to a scholarship fund established for that student. The
RAP Scholarships are funded through a Youth Development Initiative
through a Family Investment Center Grant, awarded by the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
We are so proud of these students and we are happy to provide
the financial assistance they need to pursue their dreams,
said Tim Barry, LMHA Executive Director. Well do everything
we can to help them achieve their goals.
